Driver Training Services
Yes, we can!
Driver Training Services offers a one-hour session on our virtual-reality driving simulator that will teach you all the basics of operating a manual transmission car, including:
- coordinating the clutch and shifting
- accelerating from a stop on an uphill slope
- under-revving and over-revving the engine
- upshifting and downshifting through the gears
Learn more about this training here! Our simulator is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, and is a great way to learn the basics without the risk of damaging or destroying the transmission on a real car. The cost for this one-hour session is just $59.00. Call us to schedule your training today at (215) 699-0836.
At Driver Training Services, we currently have three training cars in our fleet:
- 2009 Chevrolet Aveo (4-door mid-size)
- 2011 Chevrolet Aveo (5-door hatchback)
- 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt (2-door coupe)
The PA Department of Education mandates that vehicles used for training by private driver training schools meet the following qualifications:
- Not exceed 8 years old or 80,000 miles
- Must have passenger-mounted dual-control brake
- Must have rearview mirror and both side mirrors
All of our current cars are equipped with automatic transmissions and full climate controls for student comfort. Driver’s seats are fully adjustable, and cushions are available to students if needed. Need to learn a manual transmission?
Driver Training Services is always looking for committed, professional driving instructors who are dedicated to teaching their students safe, defensive driving skills. Learn more about becoming an instructor.

Each insurance company sets its own policies about what amount of professional instruction is required to qualify for an insurance discount, if they offer one at all. In the past, the “30/6″ standard was widely used: 30 hours of state-approved theory learning, and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Many insurance companies have stopped offering insurance discounts altogether, so check with your agent or provider for their requirements.
At Driver Training Services, we are committed to training safer drivers. Whether you qualify for an insurance discount or not, it is our mission to make your teen as safe as possible behind the wheel, and we do this by teaching defensive driving techniques. Remember that a single violation or crash by your teen could raise your insurance premiums by as much as $1,000 per year. Our focus on safe, defensive driving could not only save your teen’s life, but may also save you thousands in raised premiums by keeping him/her violation-free.
Visit our Teens section to explore our services and see pricing information for training packages.
Of course! In fact, studies have shown that drivers with high functioning autism, including Asperger’s, have a tendency to be more cautious drivers. The best way to help them learn all the complicated skills vital to safe driving is gradual training which breaks learning down to one skill at a time.
For students with Asperger’s or other high functioning autism diagnoses, we recommend a safe driving skills assessment followed by a 5-hour individual curriculum in our virtual reality driving simulator before commencing behind the wheel instruction.
The University of Virginia has just announced a major research study focusing on simulators to train autistic students to drive safely – learn more.
You can apply for your learner’s permit at age 16. To qualify, you must have a physical exam, then bring the completed PennDOT application form to your local driver licensing center. There, you will be given an eye exam and take the knowledge test. You do not need an appointment to take the learner’s permit test. Once you have it, your permit is valid for one year.
Our 30-hour theory program can prepare you for the learner’s permit knowledge test.
Driver Training Services schedules behind the wheel lessons based upon your availability and the availability of your instructor. Lessons are available 7 days per week in the morning, daytime and evenings. Call us today to schedule your training at (215) 699-0836.
Plenty safe. All of our cars have modern safety features, including air bags, crumple zones and ABS braking. Additionally, each car is installed with a dual-control braking system, allowing the instructor to keep the car (and student) from harm.
Motorweek called the 2007 Aveo “the best of the new class of subcompacts”. Watch their track test below:
The Chevrolet Aveo received 5 stars from NHTSA and an “Acceptable” in overall crash safety testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) – the lower IIHS rating is based upon concerns over side impact injuries in the 2007 model. Driver Training Services employs a 2009 4-door sedan and a 2011 five-door hatchback, neither of which has yet undergone crash testing. Watch crash test video of the 2007 Aveo below:
Our Chevrolet Cobalt also faired well in crash testings, earning 5 stars from NHTSA and a “Good” overall score (the highest available). Watch crash test footage below:
Some driving schools will “rent” out their cars to people to take their road test. We don’t do this because we maintain a high standard of training excellence at Driver Training Services. When we take a student to the test in our car, examiners know that student is well-prepared for the dangers facing them on the open road. We’re proud to accompany our students – when they’re ready.
If we haven’t trained you, we haven’t evaluated your safe driving ability. If you really want to take the test in one of our cars, we’re happy to have you, but you’ll need to go through some training first.
